The character of the British Shorthair

The British Shorthair is also known as a loving ‘teddy bear’ cat. Other than this sweet nickname suggests, this cat is not only a cat to cuddle with. The British Shorthair is an uncomplicated, friendly race with a balanced and affectionate nature. It adapts easily to, learns quickly, has got a robust body and requires little care for its coat. It is no wonder that this breed is one of the most popular cat breeds.

The breed is a very strong cat breed. The cat can very quickly adapt to new situations without giving up his interest in other matters. He loves children and likes to be close to people without insisting; still he is just as committed as a dog. The cat is a quiet house friend. He is never moody and has a sense of humor in some cases. Both sexes are generally good with dogs and other pets if they are introduced the right way with each other.

A British shorthair loves to play for hours with a mouse toy, ball or paper ball. He needs to exercise to keep fit and a scratching pole is a preference. The cat remains playful until an old age. Some colours like the silver colour (silver tabby, silver shaded etc.) can be more lively and have more temperament. The softer characters are common in the dilute colours like blue and cream.

The cat has got the habit of inspecting new visitors extensively and while they’re doing that, they will give away some hugs. Once this need is satisfied, the cat walks away quietly and will view the visitors from a respectful distance.

The British Shorthair is known for its high intelligence and great learning ability. They’ve got an excellent memory. Once they learned how to open a door, they will not forget. Once accustomed to a daily routine they will insist that you keep to this routine.

In general, adults are brave and not easily frightened. In panic situations the cat can remain surprisingly quiet. In short, the British shorthair is a perfect family cat!
